It may sometimes be called a sub-part of the larger Eurasian continent. The Nordic countries are Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland, Åland plus the Denmark territories of ‘Faeroe Island and Greenland.

What is the difference between England, Britain the United Kingdom and the British Isles?

Lets start with the most simple and smallest geographical form and build from there:

  • England is a Country.
  • Great Britain is actually the name of the large island that covers the mainland of England, Scotland and Wales. The countries within this island are also known as the country, Great Britain or simply Britain.
  • Britain plus the country of Northern Ireland is the United Kingdom, an independent country. In fact, the UK is properly known as the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
  • The British Isles is the name of the full island chain that includes the islands of Great Britain, Ireland, Isle of Man, Hebrides and other smaller islands
